What is Bitcoin BLAKE2b?

Bitcoin BLAKE2b is a Bitcoin hard fork that uses BLAKE2b instead of SHA256d for proof of work, the process miners use to produce valid blocks. It shares Bitcoin’s history before the split but continues on a separate blockchain.

According to the project’s documentation, its first BLAKE2b block was 961,640, mined on August 30, 2026.

On NonLogs, we use the ticker BTCB2 to distinguish Bitcoin BLAKE2b from Bitcoin, which remains listed as BTC. You can trade between the two through our BTCB2/BTC market.

Why does the BTCB2 fork exist?

The fork grew out of a disagreement about what Bitcoin’s blockchain should be used for. The Bitcoin BLAKE2b project argues that the network should prioritise payments rather than storing unrelated data. Its supporters see that additional data as an unnecessary cost and responsibility for people running nodes.

According to the project’s account, an earlier proposal called BIP-110 attempted to introduce data restrictions through a soft fork, but most SHA256d mining power did not support those rules. Bitcoin BLAKE2b took a different approach: a hard fork that changed the mining algorithm and introduced its own restrictions on arbitrary data storage.

BIP-110 and the BLAKE2b hard fork are therefore related, but they are not the same change.

There’s also an important distinction between the fork’s two main changes. The switch to BLAKE2b is permanent. The data restrictions are temporary, with an expiry set for September 1, 2027 under the published rules. Continuing those restrictions beyond that point would require a further decision by node operators.

You can read more about the reasoning and technical changes on the Bitcoin BLAKE2b website.
