About Tornado Cash

What is TORN?

TORN is an Ethereum token created for the Tornado Cash governance system. Tornado Cash is a separate protocol that uses deposit pools and zero-knowledge proofs to reduce the public link between deposits and withdrawals. Its original Ethereum pools hold assets such as ETH. TORN represents the governance token, while access to a pool deposit depends on the deposit's secret information. Buying TORN on NonLogs does not deposit funds into a Tornado Cash pool.

How is the token related to governance?

The original governance design used TORN locked in a governance contract to submit proposals and vote, with an option to delegate voting power to another address. Proposals contained executable code affecting contracts and parameters under governance control, including treasury-related decisions. This describes the documented design: the functions available to participants depend on the deployed contracts and subsequent proposals. TORN kept in a NonLogs exchange balance does not cast a governance vote or execute any proposal.

Are TORN transfers private?

Ordinary TORN transfers are public Ethereum token transactions. Their sending address, receiving address and amount can be inspected on a block explorer. Ethereum validators process them, with network fees paid in ETH. Holding the token adds no automatic privacy layer to an address or its transactions. The privacy mechanism in Tornado Cash pools involves a separate deposit and withdrawal process; the governance token's balance and transfers remain visible in their own contract.

How was TORN distributed?

The published distribution totals ten million TORN: 5% for early users, 10% for anonymity-mining rewards, 55% for the DAO treasury and 30% for founding developers and early supporters. These are the original allocation categories. The early-user airdrop used vouchers redeemable for TORN during a period beginning December 18, 2020. Vesting and reward schedules describe how that original supply was distributed; they do not provide a current count of freely circulating tokens or identify today's holders.

What should I check before transferring TORN?

Match the Ethereum token contract shown in the facts panel and use the address on your TORN deposit page. The original airdrop voucher, vTORN, was a separate instrument with a redemption period. A Tornado Cash pool note is secret information used to claim a pool deposit. Neither is a TORN token transfer. If you hold TORN in a personal wallet, an ordinary transfer also requires ETH to pay Ethereum's network fee.

Where can I trade TORN on NonLogs?

The markets below open the available TORN pairs. Trading the token changes your NonLogs balance without submitting a governance proposal or using a Tornado Cash pool. Each price in the trading-pairs table below comes from completed trades in that pair. Check the last-trade time and current order book before placing an order, since the latest historical price may differ from the prices available for a new trade.
