About Monero

What is Monero (XMR)?

Monero is an open-source payment network launched in April 2014. Its native currency, XMR, is used for payments and transaction fees on the Monero blockchain. Ordinary wallet transfers conceal amounts and use privacy features that make it harder to trace which funds were spent. People can receive XMR by sharing a public address without publishing a readable account balance alongside it. The project began from CryptoNote code and has since changed its mining algorithm and transaction design.

What information does Monero hide?

Stealth addresses create one-time destinations for payments, so the recipient's published address does not appear directly as the destination on the ledger. Ring signatures mix the real input with decoy outputs, and RingCT hides transaction amounts. These mechanisms limit what an outside observer can learn; they do not erase a sender's records or an exchange's account history. Privacy also depends on how a wallet is used and what information its owner shares outside the blockchain.

How does Monero secure its network?

Monero uses proof of work with RandomX, an algorithm designed to favor general-purpose CPUs over specialized mining hardware. Miners compete to produce blocks, while nodes check the work and transaction rules. The target interval is about two minutes, although individual blocks arrive sooner or later. Block capacity can adjust with demand, and oversized blocks can incur a reward penalty. Holding XMR by itself does not perform this work or earn a protocol staking reward.

Does Monero have a maximum supply?

Monero has no fixed final supply cap. Its main emission ended in 2022, followed by an ongoing tail subsidy with a base reward of 0.6 XMR per block. Block-size penalties can reduce that subsidy. At the two-minute target, issuance continues at a roughly constant rate rather than ending after a final halving. Its percentage of the growing supply therefore declines over time. The purpose is to keep a subsidy for miners alongside transaction fees.

Can I prove that I sent a Monero payment?

Yes. Monero wallets provide payment-proof tools that let a sender demonstrate a payment to a particular address. A transaction ID alone does not reveal the recipient and amount to everyone viewing an explorer. Use the wallet's proof feature when a recipient needs to verify a disputed payment, and share the proof only with the intended party. A recovery phrase or private spend key grants much broader access and is not a payment receipt.
