About Beam

What is Beam (BEAM)?

Beam is a blockchain for confidential payments and applications. Its mainnet launched in January 2019, and BEAM is the native coin used to pay transaction fees. Beam began with the Mimblewimble transaction design and later added Lelantus-MW, confidential assets and smart contracts. This listing covers the native coin on that blockchain. Other projects use the Beam name and BEAM ticker, so the network identifies which asset a wallet or exchange supports.

How does Beam protect transaction information?

Mimblewimble conceals ordinary payment amounts with cryptographic commitments and combines transactions within blocks. Lelantus-MW adds a shielded pool whose spending proofs hide which earlier output is being spent. Beam's ledger still exposes information such as fees and block structure, and amounts locked in smart contracts are publicly visible. The privacy obtained therefore depends on the transaction path. A payment's sender and recipient also retain information about their own transfer.

What can the network be used for?

Beam supports user-issued confidential assets and programs called Shaders, which run in the Beam Virtual Machine. Applications include asset exchanges and other financial contracts. BEAM pays network fees, while BEAMX is a separate governance asset associated with BeamX DAO. A wallet may hold several assets on Beam, each with its own identifier and issuer. A BEAM deposit address on an exchange should be used only for the asset that exchange lists.

How are BEAM coins issued?

Beam uses proof-of-work mining with BeamHash III. Its intended emission schedule totals 262.8 million BEAM, with periodic reductions in the block reward. Twenty percent of emissions funded the treasury during the first five years; that allocation ended in January 2024. The intended schedule must be distinguished from proof of the actual supply because a vulnerability disclosed in 2026 left uncertainty about whether unauthorized coins had previously been created.

What happened in Beam's 2026 security update?

Beam's July 2026 Hard Fork 6 announcement reported a fix for a Bulletproofs implementation flaw that could have allowed unauthorized coin creation. The developers said they found no recognizable exploitation pattern, but could not rule out past exploitation. On July 28 they published a lustration proposal: older outputs would disclose their amounts when first spent so nodes could compare disclosed supply with expected issuance. That publication describes a proposed further upgrade, with privacy costs for affected outputs.

How do I transfer or trade BEAM on NonLogs?

Use a wallet compatible with the current Beam network rules. Copy the native BEAM destination from the receiving wallet or current NonLogs deposit page and check the supported transfer format. The project's release announcements explain required wallet upgrades. The markets below show the available BEAM pairs. Select Trade to open a pair's order book. Prices and volumes in the trading-pairs table below reflect completed trades on NonLogs.
